Introduction of polycystic kidney disease

Polycystic kidney disease is one of the most common diseases caused by mutations in a single gene. There are two types of polycystic kidney diseases- the autosomal dominant form and the autosomal recessive form. The autosomal dominant form is much more common than the autosomal recessive form. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease affects 1 in 500-1,000 people, while the autosomal recessive type occurs in an estimated 1 in 20,000-40,000 people.
Five stages of polycystic kidney disease
● Emergence stage
The genetic disease is not easy to find out. Generally before 20 years old, patients hardly to find they got the disease. But if there are cases of polycystic kidney in family early detection should be taken place to observe earlier cyst.
● Growth stage:
Patients between 30 and 40, the cysts in their kidney will grow faster. In this period observation must be strengthened. Western medicine has no use in this period. Treatments for the symptomatic must take, such as high blood pressure. Though it is very passive, patients still need to treat in an active way during this period. The best treatments is to remove blood stasis role by using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) so the cyst would not growth or growth slowly.
● Swelling stage
Patients with this disease after 40 years old, the cyst can have a further growth of the swelling. When the cyst is larger than 4 cm the patients come into this period, known as swelling period. As the cysts grow larger, more clinical symptoms appears such as lumbago, proteinuria, hematuria, high blood pressure and so on. This period is the key period to combine the Chinese and western treatment to protect the kidney function.
● Bursting stage
As cyst continues to grow there will be burst. After bursting happened patients should immediately go to hospital to take treatments. Try to control the infection so as to prevent acute kidney failure.
● Uremia stage

In uremia stage treatment should focus on the protection of kidney function to prevent the further worsened condition of the kidney.
